Recognizing the continuous call by the Youth Bridge Foundation on information gaps for the hearing impaired specifically to the 2020 Elections petition hearing, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, His Lordship Justice Anin-Yeboah has introduced Sign Language Interpretation to the public telecast of the proceedings
The move demonstrates the willingness of the Court to comply with Section 7 of Ghana’s Disability Act 715 (2006), for public services and information to be made accessible and responsive to the needs of young Persons with Disability.
The initiative brought in effect on 8th February 2021 ensures:
The provision of sign language interpretation during live court proceedings and capturing it on camera.
The promotion of an inclusive and just society consistent with SDG16, with facilitation of provision that ensures the Supreme Court hearings of the 2020 Election Petition is made accessible to the deaf.
The Foundation commends the collaborative efforts of the Chief Justice, Judiciary Service, National Council on Persons with Disability for Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for advancing inclusion in this national event.
The proceedings are currently telecasted on the television and social media channels of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. We urge all, especially our youth constituents with hearing needs to actively take advantage of the initiative.
We have confidence in the Judiciary and trust our motherland Ghana will remain great, strong and united at the end of the Hearing. God Bless our Homeland Ghana.
